Political Education and Advocacy

MCL’s political education programs are designed to increase understanding about the full trajectory of U.S. violence domestically and abroad. We contextualize wars, surveillance, the Guantánamo Bay prison system, and corporate ties to the U.S. government in a way that centers Muslims’ lived experiences. To truly dismantle these harmful, violent structures, we must identify and challenge the roots of each system and analyze how each is connected to the others. This program also operates with the understanding that one of the consequences of institutionalized Islamophobia in the War on Terror, is the internalization of Islamophobia within Muslims. Additionally, we hold politicians, prison systems, and corporations closely tied to the government accountable for laws and actions that perpetuate violence, marginalization, and inequity.

Our political education and organizing activities include:

  • Teach-ins about the War on Terror domestically and globally and its rootedness in institutionalized Islamophobia as manifested in US wars in Muslim majority countries, federal terrorism prosecutions, surveillance, detention and torture

  • Dismantling internalized Islamophobia trainings focused on identifying manifestations of this form of oppression and how to challenge it

  • In-person and online campaigns focus on supporting and seeking justice for War on Terror victims
